It took Microsoft, a huge corporation with vast software development resources, years to catch up to the Netscape web browser, which itself had taken years to develop. Second, history had taught me that web browsers are not easy to create. I'd used Konqueror before and was not impressed. How could Safari have either of those without Gecko? Safari used the KHTML layout engine from the Konqueror web browser which was created as part of the K Desktop Environment in Linux. As Mac IE5 aged, speed and standards support had become a sore point. When Safari was introduced, I looked upon it with suspicion and not a little disdain.įirst, Safari didn't even use Gecko, the speedy and capable layout engine behind the Mozilla web browser. I'm a bit of a usability snob as well, so I stuck with IE5 even as newer, faster browsers were introduced, simply because I could not stomach their user interfaces. I remained faithful to Mac IE5 over the years, following it across OSes from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. While Netscape languished, Mac IE5 just got better and better. I was a web standards snob in the '90s (okay, I still am), so I welcomed Internet Explorer 5 for the Mac, one of the first browsers to have extensive CSS1 support, with open arms.
In less than a year, Apple has created what is arguably the best all-around web browser on any platform, and has done so in a way that allows it to interoperate with millions of web sites that are designed for severely broken Microsoft and Netscape browsers from the previous decade. Let's look at what Apple has done with Safari. I think Safari is one of Apple's greatest software success stories.
